What is the best 5-day Kerala honeymoon itinerary?
The best 5-day Kerala honeymoon itinerary starts at Kochi airport and gives two nights to Munnar, one night to Thekkady and the last night to an Alleppey houseboat, before returning to Kochi. It covers tea hills, wildlife and backwaters with one drive a day and no backtracking.
Key takeaways
- Route: Kochi → Munnar (2 nights) → Thekkady (1 night) → Alleppey houseboat (1 night) → Kochi.
- Hills first, backwaters last: the trip grows slower and more private as it goes.
- The longest drive is on day one, about 4 hours from Kochi to Munnar.
- You board the houseboat at noon on day four and disembark at 9 am on day five.
- This is our Romantic Kerala package, from ₹29,999 per couple.
What does a 5-day Kerala honeymoon look like day by day?
Five days is enough for Kerala's three classic landscapes: tea hills, forest and backwaters. The plan below is the one we run as Romantic Kerala, our lead honeymoon package: 4 Nights · 5 Days, private throughout, with the same driver from the airport pickup to the final drop.
| Day | Route | Highlights | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Kochi airport → Munnar (about 4 hours) | Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, evening tea estate walk | Munnar |
| Day 2 | Munnar | Eravikulam National Park, Top Station, KDHP Tea Museum | Munnar |
| Day 3 | Munnar → Thekkady (about 2.5 hours) | Periyar Lake boat ride, spice garden, Kalaripayattu show | Thekkady |
| Day 4 | Thekkady → Alleppey (about 3 hours) | Board the houseboat at noon, backwater cruise, sunset on the water | Houseboat, Alleppey |
| Day 5 | Alleppey → Kochi | Breakfast on deck, disembark at 9 am, optional Fort Kochi walk | Journey home |
Why start in Munnar and end on the backwaters?
Because the trip gets slower and more private as it goes. The first two days are the active ones, with viewpoints, a national park and walks in the tea. Thekkady is a gentler day in the forest. The houseboat comes last, when there is nothing left to see and a whole afternoon to do very little, which is the part most couples remember.
The order also suits the map. The route is a loop: east from Kochi into the hills at Munnar, south to Thekkady, west down to the coast at Alleppey, then north back to Kochi. Each drive moves you forward. The longest is on day one, when the road itself, climbing past waterfalls into tea country, is part of the day, and nothing after it runs much beyond 3 hours.
What do you do in Munnar on days one and two?
Day one is the drive up and a quiet evening; day two is for Munnar itself. Your driver meets you at Kochi airport and the road climbs for about 4 hours, with stops at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls on the way. Try to land by late morning so you reach the hills in daylight. After check-in there is time for a walk through a tea estate before dinner.
Day two takes in Eravikulam National Park, where Nilgiri tahr graze on open grassland, then Top Station for the long view across the ranges, and the KDHP Tea Museum to see how the leaf becomes tea. For early risers, an optional sunrise hike is worth the alarm. It is a full day, paced to suit you. Our Munnar guide lists what else is close by if you would rather swap a viewpoint for a longer walk.
What happens in Thekkady on day three?
Day three is the forest day. The drive from Munnar takes about 2.5 hours through cardamom and pepper country. In the afternoon you take the boat ride on Periyar Lake, inside the Periyar wildlife sanctuary, where elephants, deer and birds come down to the water's edge. Sightings depend on the day, so treat them as a bonus rather than a promise.
Afterwards, a spice garden tour shows you pepper, cardamom and cinnamon growing rather than sitting in jars, and the evening ends with a show of Kalaripayattu, Kerala's own martial art. The Periyar Lake boat ride is included in the package. There is more on the town in our Thekkady guide.
What is the houseboat night like on day four?
Day four is the one the trip builds towards. After about 3 hours on the road from Thekkady, you board your luxury air-conditioned houseboat at noon in Alleppey. Lunch is served on deck, with Kerala fish curry, as the boat moves through canals and past villages where daily life runs along the water.
By evening the boat moors for the night. You watch the sunset from the deck, have dinner on board and sleep on the backwaters. Lunch, dinner and the next morning's breakfast are all included. Our Alleppey houseboat guide covers life on board in more detail, including the questions worth asking before you confirm a boat.
On day five you wake on still water, have breakfast on deck and disembark at 9 am. The drive to Kochi airport takes 2 to 2.5 hours, more in traffic, so book a flight from mid-afternoon onwards. With an evening flight, there is time for a walk around Fort Kochi first.
How can you adapt this itinerary?
The route is a starting point, and every part of it can be personalised. These are the changes couples ask for most.
- Shorter: leave out Thekkady and keep the hills and the houseboat with Munnar & Alleppey, 3 Nights · 4 Days.
- Longer: add the beach. The 7-day Kerala itinerary continues south from Alleppey to Kovalam and ends at Trivandrum airport.
- Slower: add a third night in Munnar if you would rather walk than collect viewpoints.
- More of an occasion: honeymoon inclusions are arranged on request. Tell us what would make the trip feel like yours.
- A different season: through February and March, Eravikulam National Park is usually closed for the calving season, and we rework day two around it. See the best time to visit Kerala for each month.
The package starts from ₹29,999 per couple. That covers the four nights, the private cab and driver, daily breakfast, all houseboat meals and the Periyar Lake boat ride. Flights, lunches and dinners at the hotels, entry fees and personal expenses are not included. For how the price changes with season and stay category, see our Kerala trip cost guide.
