How many days are enough for Munnar?
Two nights and three days are enough for Munnar. That gives one full day for Mattupetty Dam, Kundala Lake, Echo Point and the tea museum, plus a morning at Eravikulam National Park. Add a third night for a Kolukkumalai sunrise or simply a slower pace. The best months are September to March.
- Ideal stay
- 2 nights; 3 for a slower pace
- Best months
- September to March
- Nearest airport
- Kochi (COK), about 4 hours by road
- Known for
- Tea estates, Nilgiri tahr, misty viewpoints
What to do in Munnar?
The essential things to do in Munnar are Eravikulam National Park, the lake road to Mattupetty and Kundala, Top Station and a tea-estate walk. The sights lie along separate roads out of town, so plan one direction per half-day.
- Eravikulam National Park (Rajamala): a park bus climbs to grassland where the endangered Nilgiri tahr graze beside the path. It is usually closed through February and March, the calving season.
- Mattupetty Dam and Kundala Lake: the classic lake road east of town, with boating at both and Echo Point between them.
- Top Station: the far end of the same road, about 32 km from town, looking down on the plains of Tamil Nadu. Clearest early in the day.
- KDHP Tea Museum: old estate machinery, a demonstration of how leaf becomes tea, and a tasting.
- Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls: roadside falls on the drive up from Kochi, fullest during and just after the monsoon.
- Kolukkumalai sunrise: a pre-dawn jeep ride from Suryanelli to a tea estate high on the ridge.
- Tea-estate walk: an hour on foot between the bushes soon after sunrise, while mist still fills the valleys.
Where to stay in Munnar?
Stay in the estates around Munnar, not in the town centre. The town is a busy market junction, and the views people come for are a short drive outside it.
| Area | What it is like | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Chithirapuram, Pallivasal, Anachal | Valley-view resorts on the Kochi side of town | First visits; a shorter arrival drive |
| Munnar town | Walkable to shops and restaurants; busier, fewer views | Late arrivals, one-night stays |
| Devikulam and nearby estates | Colonial-era tea bungalows and small plantation stays | Couples wanting quiet |
| Chinnakanal and Suryanelli | Ridge-top resorts with wide views, about 45 minutes beyond town | Scenery first; onward to Thekkady |
Melo Tours uses premium hill resorts here; if you are continuing to Thekkady, tell us and we suggest an area to suit your route. Ready-made options are on our Munnar tour packages page.
How many days in Munnar: one, two or three nights?
Two nights suits most travellers, because the drive from Kochi takes about 4 hours and leaves only the evening free on arrival day.
| Stay | What fits | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 1 night | An evening tea walk and one road of sights next morning | Rushed; a stopover only |
| 2 nights | The lake road, tea museum and Eravikulam | Right for most trips |
| 3 nights | Adds a Kolukkumalai sunrise and an easier pace | Honeymooners, families with young children |
The Munnar Short Escape is the two-night version on its own. The Romantic Kerala honeymoon keeps two nights here before Thekkady and an Alleppey houseboat, and the 10-day Kerala Complete Circuit gives Munnar three.

How does Munnar fit into a Kerala route?
Munnar is usually the first stop after landing at Kochi, because the hill drive is the longest of the trip. From here the classic route runs south through spice country to the backwaters.
- 1
Kochi
Airport pickup, then about 4 hours uphill.
- 2
Munnar
Two nights among the tea estates.
- 3
Thekkady
About 2.5 hours through cardamom country for the Periyar Lake boat ride.
- 4
Alleppey
About 3 hours down to the backwaters for a night on a houseboat.
When is the best time to visit Munnar?
September to March is the best time for Munnar, with clear views, cool days and cold nights from December to February.
| When | Weather | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| September – November | Green after the rains, waterfalls full, some showers | Very good, and quieter |
| December – February | Clear and cold; nights can drop below 10°C | Best, though Eravikulam is usually closed in February; December–January fills about 6 weeks ahead |
| March – May | Mild and dry while the plains are hot | A good summer escape |
| June – August | Heavy monsoon rain, mist and low cloud | For rain lovers; views often clouded |
Munnar: Your Questions, Answered
How do I reach Munnar from Kochi airport?
Munnar is about 4 hours by road from Kochi airport, climbing through Neriamangalam and Adimali. It has no airport or railway station of its own. Melo Tours sends a private air-conditioned cab to meet your flight, with the same driver throughout the trip.
Is Munnar safe to visit during the monsoon?
Munnar stays open through the monsoon, from June to August, and the hills are at their greenest. Expect heavy rain, mist over the viewpoints and occasional road blocks after landslips, so keep plans flexible and avoid driving after dark.
Is Munnar good for a honeymoon?
Yes. Munnar is the usual first stop on a Kerala honeymoon, with cool weather, quiet tea-estate walks and valley-view resorts. Two nights here pair well with a night in Thekkady and one on an Alleppey houseboat, the route of the 5-day Romantic Kerala package.
Can Munnar and Alleppey be covered in one trip?
Yes. Munnar and Alleppey are about 3.5 hours apart by road, and four days cover both: two nights in Munnar and one on a houseboat. Leave Munnar after an early breakfast to board around noon, then drive to Kochi next morning for your flight.
What should I pack for Munnar?
Pack a light jacket or sweater in any month, and proper warm layers from December to February. Add walking shoes with grip for tea-estate paths, a rain jacket between June and November, and motion-sickness tablets if winding hill roads trouble you.
