Is one night enough in Alleppey?
One night is enough for Alleppey if you spend it on a houseboat: you board around noon, cruise Vembanad Lake and the Kuttanad canals until sunset, and disembark at 9 am. Stay two nights if you also want a canoe ride through the narrow village canals, Marari Beach or a quiet evening at a lakeside resort.
- Ideal stay
- 1 night on a houseboat; 2 with a lake resort
- Best months
- October to February
- Nearest airport
- Kochi (COK), about 2 hours by road
- Known for
- Houseboats, Kuttanad canals, Vembanad Lake
What to do in Alleppey besides the houseboat?
Beyond the houseboat, the best things to do in Alleppey are a canoe ride through the village canals, a drive through the Kuttanad paddy country and a sunset at Marari Beach.
- Overnight houseboat cruise: a kettuvallam with its own crew and cook, on Punnamada and Vembanad lakes. Our Alleppey houseboat guide explains how the day runs.
- Canoe or shikara ride: two to three hours through channels the big boats cannot enter, past homes, duck flocks and coir boats. Early morning is best.
- Kuttanad paddy country: rice fields farmed below sea level behind earth bunds, seen from the water or the road to Changanassery.
- Marari Beach: a long, quiet fishing-village beach about 30 minutes north of town.
- Alappuzha Beach: the town beach, with the remains of an old sea pier and a lighthouse close by.
- Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple: about 14 km south, known for the sweet milk payasam served as prasadam.
- Pathiramanal Island: a small bird-rich island in Vembanad Lake, reached only by boat.
- Nehru Trophy Boat Race: long snake boats race on Punnamada Lake, usually in August.
Where to stay in Alleppey: houseboat, lake resort or beach?
Spend the first night on a houseboat and any second night on land. A houseboat moors at sunset and does not sail after dark, so two nights afloat repeat the same experience.
| Stay | What it is like | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Houseboat | A boat with an air-conditioned bedroom, crew and all meals; moors at sunset | Everyone, for one night |
| Lakeside resort | Rooms and villas facing Punnamada or Vembanad, with pools and jetties | Couples and families wanting space |
| Marari Beach stay | Low-rise beach resorts and villas among coconut groves | A slow last day by the sea |
| Canal-side heritage home | A few rooms in an old Kuttanad house | Travellers who want village life |
Melo Tours arranges the houseboat as one night of a complete Kerala trip, not as a standalone rental. What the houseboat night includes is set out on the Alleppey houseboat packages and Kerala houseboat pages.
How many days do you need in Alleppey?
One night suits most itineraries, and two suit travellers who want the backwaters at walking pace. A few hours' day cruise is possible, but it misses the evening light, dinner on deck and waking on still water.
The Munnar & Alleppey route and the Romantic Kerala honeymoon both keep the houseboat for the last night, a calm finish before the flight from Kochi. With a second night, add a morning canoe ride, Marari Beach and a lakeside resort.

Where does Alleppey sit on a Kerala route?
Alleppey comes after the hills. Travellers drive down from Munnar or Thekkady in the morning, board at noon, and next day either fly home from Kochi or carry on south to the beaches.
- 1
Munnar
Two nights in the tea hills, about 4 hours from Kochi airport.
- 2
Thekkady
One night beside the Periyar forest, about 2.5 hours from Munnar.
- 3
Alleppey
About 3 hours from Thekkady; the houseboat is boarded at noon.
- 4
Kochi or Kovalam
About 2 hours back to Kochi airport, or about 4 hours south to Kovalam's beaches.
When is the best time to visit Alleppey?
October to February is the best time for Alleppey, with calm water and comfortable nights on deck; the driest weeks run from December.
| When | Weather | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| October – February | Showers in October and November, then dry, warm days and mild nights | Best; reserve December–January about 6 weeks ahead |
| March – May | Hot and humid | Fine on an air-conditioned houseboat |
| June – September | Monsoon rain, green paddy, boat races | Atmospheric; cruises can be shortened in heavy rain |

How do I reach Alleppey from Kochi airport?
Alleppey is about 2 hours by road from Kochi airport, roughly 85 km to the south, and Alappuzha has its own railway station. On a Melo Tours trip a private air-conditioned cab brings you to the houseboat jetty in time for the noon boarding.
Is Alleppey worth visiting in the monsoon?
Yes, if you enjoy rain. From June to September the paddy fields are bright green, the canals are full and fewer boats are out. Expect heavy showers, and cruises can be shortened on very wet or windy days. Choose a houseboat with a covered deck and an air-conditioned bedroom.
Is a houseboat safe for children and older parents?
A houseboat suits families well: it moves slowly on calm inland water, the crew is on board throughout and bedrooms have attached bathrooms. Keep small children within reach on the open deck and ask for life jackets when you board.
What food is served on an Alleppey houseboat?
Meals are cooked fresh on board by the boat's own cook. Lunch is typically a Kerala spread of rice, fish curry, vegetable dishes and fried fish, followed by tea and snacks, dinner and breakfast next morning. Vegetarian and child-friendly meals are arranged if you ask in advance.
Can I combine Alleppey with Kumarakom?
Yes. Kumarakom is on the opposite shore of Vembanad Lake, about an hour from Alleppey by road. A common plan is one night on an Alleppey houseboat, then a night at a Kumarakom lake resort. Melo Tours arranges this as a personalised itinerary.
