Kumarakom or Alleppey: which is better for the backwaters?
Choose Kumarakom for a quiet lakefront resort stay and birdwatching, and Alleppey for an overnight houseboat and narrow village canals. Kumarakom lies on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, about an hour by road from Alleppey, so many travellers do both: one night on a houseboat, then one or two nights in a Kumarakom resort.
- Ideal stay
- 2 nights; 1 as an add-on
- Best months
- November to February
- Nearest airport
- Kochi (COK), about 2 to 2.5 hours
- Known for
- Lake resorts, bird sanctuary, sunsets
What to do in Kumarakom?
The things to do in Kumarakom are all about the lake: a sunset cruise, the bird sanctuary at dawn and a canoe ride through the village canals. Most are short, on the water and start from your resort jetty.
- Sunset cruise on Vembanad Lake: Kumarakom faces west across the lake, so the sun goes down over open water.
- Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: a walking trail through mangrove and wetland. Go soon after sunrise, and between November and February for migratory birds.
- Village canal canoe ride: a quiet hour or two past homes, toddy tappers and duck farms.
- Pathiramanal Island: a small uninhabited island in the lake, reached by boat and good for birds.
- Village life experience: coir making, coconut-leaf weaving and net fishing shown by local families under Kerala's Responsible Tourism programme.
- Lake cuisine: karimeen (pearl spot) fried or cooked in banana leaf, duck roast, and tapioca with fish curry.
- Ayurvedic treatment: many lake resorts have their own treatment centres.
Where to stay in Kumarakom?
Stay on the lakefront if you can. Kumarakom is a resort destination, and the stay itself, with its lawns, lagoon pools and private jetties, is most of the experience.
| Stay | What it is like | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Lakefront resort | Villas and cottages facing Vembanad, often with a pool and jetty | Honeymooners; a restful finish |
| Canal-side homestay or retreat | A few rooms in a village setting, with home-cooked food | Travellers who like local life |
| Houseboat | One night on the water with crew and all meals | Those not boarding at Alleppey |

How many days are enough for Kumarakom?
Two nights is right if Kumarakom is your backwater base, and one night works as an add-on after an Alleppey houseboat. Two nights give a full day with nothing to do but the lake: the bird sanctuary at dawn, a late breakfast, a canoe ride and the sunset cruise.
| Compare | Kumarakom | Alleppey |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Lakefront resort stays | Overnight houseboats |
| Water | Open Vembanad Lake | Lake plus narrow Kuttanad canals |
| Pace | Quiet, fewer boats | Busier, more to see |
| From Kochi airport | About 2 to 2.5 hours | About 2 hours |
Is Kumarakom part of a Melo Tours package?
No published package includes Kumarakom; we arrange it as a personalised itinerary and send a quote within 24 hours. The simplest way is to add a night after the houseboat on the Romantic Kerala honeymoon route, or to stay here in place of Alleppey if you prefer a resort to a boat. Our Alleppey houseboat guide explains the houseboat side.

How does Kumarakom fit a Kerala route?
Kumarakom takes the backwater slot after the hills. It is reached from Thekkady or Alleppey, and it leaves a manageable drive to Kochi airport on the last day.
- 1
Munnar
Two nights in tea country after landing at Kochi.
- 2
Thekkady
One night by Periyar Lake.
- 3
Kumarakom
Roughly 3.5 hours down from Thekkady via Kottayam, or about an hour from Alleppey after a houseboat night.
- 4
Kochi
About 2 to 2.5 hours to the airport.
When is the best time to visit Kumarakom?
November to February is the best time for Kumarakom: dry weather, cooler evenings and migratory birds at the sanctuary.
| When | Weather | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| November – February | Dry and pleasant; migratory birds present | Best |
| March – May | Hot and humid, eased by the lake breeze | Fine for pool-based resort stays |
| June – August | Monsoon; the lake is full, downpours are frequent | Quiet; the traditional season for Ayurveda |
| September – October | Rain easing, everything green | Good, with the odd shower |
Kumarakom: Your Questions, Answered
How do I reach Kumarakom?
Kumarakom is about 2 to 2.5 hours by road from Kochi airport and about 30 minutes from Kottayam, which has the nearest railway station. From Alleppey it is about an hour by road around the lake. Melo Tours arranges a private air-conditioned cab with the same driver for the whole route.
Is Kumarakom good for a honeymoon?
Yes. Kumarakom is a favourite Kerala honeymoon stop for its lakefront villas, quiet evenings and sunset cruises. It suits couples who want privacy and rest after the hill drives. Pair two nights here with Munnar, or add one night after an Alleppey houseboat for both sides of the backwaters.
What birds can you see at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary?
Resident birds seen all year include herons, egrets, cormorants, darters, kingfishers and waterfowl, and migratory species join them roughly from November to February. Walk the trail soon after sunrise, when the birds are most active, or watch the waterside colonies from a boat. Midday visits are hot and quiet.
Can I take a houseboat from Kumarakom?
Yes. Houseboats sail from Kumarakom on the same Vembanad Lake as those from Alleppey, on overnight or daytime cruises, and this side of the lake has fewer boats. The narrow village canals are better reached from Alleppey. Melo Tours arranges houseboat nights as part of a complete Kerala trip.
Is Kumarakom worth visiting in the monsoon?
For a resort stay, yes. From June to August the lake is full, the gardens are lush and it is the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment. Expect heavy showers on most days, some cancelled cruises and few migratory birds.
