Which is the best beach in Kovalam?

Lighthouse Beach is the best beach in Kovalam for most visitors: it is the largest of the three bays, with lifeguards, a promenade of seafood restaurants and the red-and-white lighthouse above it. Hawa Beach next door is quieter, and Samudra Beach to the north is the least crowded, with larger resorts. Two nights cover all three.

Stay near Lighthouse Beach for a lively first visit, or on a headland to the north or south for a quieter resort stay. Kovalam is three small crescent bays divided by rocky outcrops, and each has its own character.

What to do in Kovalam and nearby?

The main things to do in Kovalam are swimming at Lighthouse Beach, climbing the lighthouse and a half-day outing to Trivandrum or Poovar. Keep one full day free for the beach.

  • Vizhinjam Lighthouse: climb the red-and-white tower above Lighthouse Beach for a view over all three bays.
  • Lighthouse Beach: swim and walk in the morning, when the water is calmest, and follow the lifeguards' flags.
  • Vizhinjam fishing harbour: a working harbour a short drive south, busiest at dawn when the boats land their catch.
  • Ayurveda session: Kovalam is one of Kerala's main centres for it. Treatments are extra to our packages.
  • Poovar backwaters: about 40 minutes south, a boat ride through mangroves to the sandbar where the river meets the sea.
  • Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple: about 30 minutes away in Trivandrum. Entry is for Hindus only and a traditional dress code applies.
  • Napier Museum and Kuthiramalika Palace: Trivandrum's two heritage stops, easily paired with the temple.
  • Kanyakumari: about 2 hours each way to the southern tip of India, as a long day trip.

How many days are enough for Kovalam?

Two nights are enough for Kovalam: one unhurried beach day and one half-day outing. It is the natural last stop, because nobody wants a long drive on the morning of a flight.

The 5-day Romantic Kerala honeymoon ends at Alleppey and does not reach Kovalam. Hills, backwaters and beach together need seven days, which our 7-day Kerala itinerary lays out; a night in Varkala on the way makes it eight.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Kovalam: Your Questions, Answered

Is Kovalam beach safe for swimming?

Lighthouse Beach is the main swimming beach in Kovalam, with lifeguards on duty and calmer water from November to March. Swim between the flags and stay clear of the rocks at either end, where currents are stronger. During the monsoon, from June to September, lifeguards regularly stop swimming altogether.

Kovalam or Varkala: which is better?

Kovalam is better for a restful resort stay, easier swimming and Ayurveda, and it is 30 minutes from the airport. Varkala, about 1.5 hours north, is better for cliff-top sunsets, cafés and a livelier mood. With eight days or more you can stay at both, Varkala first.

Is Kovalam good for families and older travellers?

Yes. Kovalam is compact and close to the airport, the main bay has lifeguards, and resorts have pools and gardens for children. Older travellers like the short transfers and the option of gentle Ayurvedic treatments. Ask for a property with easy access to the beach, as some sit on steep headlands.

Can I do Ayurveda treatments in Kovalam?

Yes. Kovalam and the Chowara coast just south of it are among Kerala's main Ayurveda centres, with everything from a one-hour massage to programmes of a week or more under a resident doctor. Treatments are not included in Melo Tours packages; tell us what you want and we plan the stay around it.

Can I visit Kanyakumari from Kovalam?

Yes. Kanyakumari is about 2 hours from Kovalam, so it works as a long day trip to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the Thiruvalluvar Statue and the southern tip of India. The 10-day Kerala Complete Circuit includes a night there instead, for the sunrise as well.
