Best Time to Visit Kerala: A Month-by-Month Guide

October to March is Kerala's most comfortable season, but the right month depends on whether you want tea hills, a houseboat or the beach. Here is how each month really feels.

By Melo Tours Travel Team · Updated

What is the best time to visit Kerala?

The best time to visit Kerala is October to March, when days are dry and comfortable across the hills, backwaters and beaches. December and January are the peak months. April and May suit Munnar and other hill stays, while June to September is the monsoon, good for Ayurveda and green landscapes.

Key takeaways

  • October to March is the most comfortable season across Kerala; December and January are the busiest months.
  • April and May are hot on the coast but pleasant in Munnar and Thekkady.
  • June to September is the monsoon: green, quiet and the traditional season for Ayurveda.
  • For a houseboat night choose October to March; for a honeymoon, late September to March.
  • December–January fills about 6 weeks ahead, so plan those dates early.

Which months are best for a Kerala trip?

October to March is the best window for most Kerala trips. The heavy rain has passed, the hills are green, the backwaters are full and the coast is calm enough for the beach. Within that window, October and November still bring afternoon showers, December and January are dry and busy, and February and March are warm and quieter.

Kerala has three broad seasons: winter from December to February, summer from March to May, and the monsoon from June to September, with a second, lighter spell of rain in October and November.

Is winter (December to February) the best season in Kerala?

Yes, for most travellers winter is the easiest season: dry, less humid and comfortable in every part of the state. Days on the coast are warm and sunny, while Munnar is cool enough for a jacket in the evening, and its nights can drop below 10°C in January.

The trade-off is company. Christmas to mid-January is when Kerala is at its fullest, and the better resorts and houseboats are reserved early: December–January fills about 6 weeks ahead. February has the same dry weather with noticeably more room.

Is summer (March to May) too hot for Kerala?

Summer is hot and humid on the coast and in the backwaters, but the hills stay pleasant, which is why April and May are popular months for Munnar. At around 1,500 metres, Munnar is several degrees cooler than Kochi or Alleppey, and Thekkady's forest keeps its mornings fresh.

If you travel in these months, weight the trip towards the hills and keep the lowland days short. Munnar Short Escape, 2 Nights · 3 Days in the tea country, suits the season well. Expect school-holiday families in the hill towns, especially at weekends.

What is Kerala like in the monsoon (June to September)?

The monsoon is wet, green and quiet: heavy rain in June and July, easing through August and September. It is not the season for a packed sightseeing list, but it suits travellers who want quiet roads, full waterfalls and long resort afternoons.

It is also the traditional season for Ayurveda, when the cool, damp weather is considered right for a course of treatments. These are arranged separately from our packages, so tell us if that is the purpose of your trip.

  • Hills: mist, full waterfalls and slower drives; in very heavy spells a hill road can close for a time.
  • Backwaters: houseboats continue to run, though the cruising route may be adjusted on days of heavy rain.
  • Beaches: the sea at Kovalam and Varkala is rough, and swimming is usually not allowed.
  • Festivals: Onam falls in August or September, and the snake boat races around Alleppey are traditionally held in those months.

The lighter rain of October and November usually arrives as afternoon thundershowers and rarely disrupts a trip.

When should you go for a honeymoon, a family trip or a houseboat?

Late September to March suits honeymoons and houseboat nights, while school holidays decide most family trips.

For couples, the route matters as much as the month. Our lead honeymoon trip, Romantic Kerala, covers Munnar, Thekkady and an Alleppey houseboat in 4 Nights · 5 Days from ₹29,999 per couple, and it runs comfortably from late September to March. The 5-day Kerala honeymoon itinerary walks through it day by day.

If a houseboat is the centrepiece, our Alleppey houseboat guide explains what a night on the water involves. For families, the longer Kerala Grand Tour adds two nights by the sea at Kovalam.

How far ahead should you plan a Kerala trip?

For December and January, start about six weeks ahead. Outside those months there is more room, and shorter notice is usually workable. Long weekends and festival holidays behave like small peak seasons, particularly in Munnar.

If your dates are fixed, share them early; if they are flexible, say so, because moving a trip by a few days can open up better stays. We send a personalised itinerary within 24 hours of an enquiry, at no charge. Our Kerala trip cost guide for couples explains how the season moves a quote.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Your Questions, Answered

Which is the peak tourist season in Kerala?

Peak season in Kerala runs from mid-December to mid-January, when the weather is dry and the Christmas and New Year holidays bring the most visitors. Resorts and houseboats on the Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey route are in highest demand then. December–January fills about 6 weeks ahead, so early planning matters.

Is it safe to travel to Kerala during the monsoon?

Most monsoon trips to Kerala run normally. Rain is heaviest from June to August, when hill roads, sights and boating can be closed on alert days and the sea is too rough for swimming. Keep sightseeing days light, follow local advisories and stay flexible with your plans.

What is the best month for a Kerala honeymoon?

January and February are best for a Kerala honeymoon: dry days, cool Munnar evenings, calm houseboat nights. February is quieter, but Eravikulam National Park is usually closed then. Late September, October and November are also good choices: greener after the rains, with occasional afternoon showers.

Can you stay on an Alleppey houseboat in the rainy season?

Usually, yes. Houseboats run all year unless floods or severe weather halt boating. The backwaters are full and very green, and there are far fewer boats on the water. On days of heavy rain the cruising route may be shortened, with more time spent in the covered lounge than on deck.
