What is Thekkady famous for?

Thekkady is famous for the Periyar Tiger Reserve, where boat rides on Periyar Lake give a chance of seeing wild elephants, gaur and sambar deer on the forested shore. It is also Kerala's spice country, with cardamom and pepper plantations around Kumily town. One night is enough for the boat ride, a spice garden and a Kalaripayattu show.

What is there to do in Thekkady?

The main things to do in Thekkady are the Periyar Lake boat ride, a spice plantation tour and an evening Kalaripayattu show. Activities inside the reserve run at fixed times with limited places, so they are booked first and the day is planned around them.

  • Periyar Lake boat ride: about an hour and a half on the reservoir at the centre of the reserve. The earliest and latest departures give the best chance of elephants at the water's edge.
  • Guided nature walk: two to three hours on foot along the forest edge with a trained local guide.
  • Bamboo rafting: a full-day programme of forest walking and rafting, for travellers staying two nights.
  • Spice plantation tour: cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, vanilla and coffee on the plant, explained by a grower.
  • Kalaripayattu show: an hour of Kerala's martial art, performed in the evening in Kumily.
  • Kathakali performance: a short introduction to the dance-drama, with the make-up applied in front of you.
  • Chellarkovil viewpoint: about 15 km out, looking over the plains of Tamil Nadu.

Where to stay in Thekkady?

Stay on the forest side of Kumily, within a few minutes of the reserve gate. Kumily is the town; Thekkady is the forest and lake about 4 km beyond it, and almost every stay lies between the two.

The published Melo Tours routes use a jungle resort for one night. If wildlife is the reason for your trip, ask for two nights and a plantation stay.

How many days are enough for Thekkady?

One night is enough for most travellers. Arrive from Munnar by lunch, take the afternoon boat ride and a spice tour, watch Kalaripayattu after dark and leave for the backwaters after breakfast. That is how the Romantic Kerala honeymoon and the Kerala Grand Tour run it.

Stay two nights for the full-day bamboo rafting, a longer trek or an unhurried morning in the forest. Our 5-day Kerala honeymoon itinerary shows where the extra night fits.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Thekkady: Your Questions, Answered

Can you see tigers in Thekkady?

Tiger sightings in Thekkady are rare. Periyar is a tiger reserve, but the forest is dense and the cats keep away from the lake while boats are out. Visitors far more often see elephants, gaur, sambar deer, wild boar, otters and many birds. Treat a tiger as a bonus, not the plan.

How do I book the Periyar Lake boat ride?

Boat tickets are sold for fixed departure times through the day and seats are limited, so they run out quickly in the December and January holidays. The boat ride is included in the Romantic Kerala package, and the Melo Tours team plans the slot around your arrival time from Munnar.

How far is Thekkady from Munnar and Alleppey?

Thekkady is about 2.5 hours from Munnar and about 3 hours from Alleppey by road, which is why it sits between the two on most Kerala routes. Kochi airport is roughly 4 to 4.5 hours away. These are winding hill roads, so drives are planned for daylight.

Is Thekkady suitable for families with children?

Yes. The boat ride, a spice garden walk and the Kalaripayattu show all work well for children, and none of them is strenuous. Check the minimum age before booking bamboo rafting or forest treks, which are meant for older children and adults.

What should I buy in Thekkady?

Buy whole spices. Green cardamom, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg grow in the hills around Kumily and are fresher here than in city shops. Estate tea, coffee and home-made chocolate are also sold everywhere. Choose a plantation shop or an established store in the Kumily market.
