Alleppey Houseboat Guide: How an Overnight Stay on the Backwaters Works

What a night on an Alleppey houseboat is really like: boarding times, meals, day cruise versus overnight, Alleppey versus Kumarakom, and the questions to ask before you confirm a boat.

By Melo Tours Travel Team · Updated

How does an overnight houseboat stay in Alleppey work?

An overnight Alleppey houseboat stay runs from noon to 9 am the next day. You board at midday, cruise the backwaters through the afternoon with lunch on deck, moor before dark, then have dinner and sleep on board in an air-conditioned bedroom. Breakfast is served before you disembark. All three meals are included.

Key takeaways

  • Board at noon, disembark at 9 am: one night gives you an afternoon cruise, a sunset and a morning on the water.
  • Lunch, dinner and breakfast are cooked on board and included.
  • An overnight stay is the full experience; a day cruise suits tight schedules.
  • October to March is the most comfortable season, and December–January fills about 6 weeks ahead.
  • We arrange houseboat nights as part of a complete Kerala trip, not as standalone rentals.

What is a Kerala houseboat?

A Kerala houseboat is a floating private stay, built on the lines of the kettuvallam, the wooden rice barge that once carried cargo through these waterways. Today's boats keep the long hull and the curved roof of bamboo and palm leaf, and add what a hotel room would have: an air-conditioned bedroom with an attached bathroom, a shaded lounge and dining deck at the front, and a kitchen at the back.

A small crew, typically a captain, a cook and a helper, runs the boat and looks after you. Alleppey, also written Alappuzha, is the main base. Boats set out from its jetties into Vembanad Lake and the canals of Kuttanad, a rice-growing region where the paddy fields lie below the level of the water around them.

What is the difference between a day cruise and an overnight stay?

A day cruise gives you a few hours on the water with lunch; an overnight stay adds the evening, the night and the early morning, which are the best parts.

Every Melo Tours package that includes Alleppey uses the overnight stay, because one night changes the experience so much. If you would rather sleep on land, we can plan a day cruise and a backwater resort as a personalised itinerary.

What is a night on board like, hour by hour?

You board at noon and the boat casts off soon after. Here is how the next 21 hours usually unfold.

  1. Noon: board at the jetty in Alleppey and settle into your room as the cruise begins.
  2. Lunch: a Kerala meal served on deck, usually with fish curry, as the boat moves through canals and past villages.
  3. Afternoon: slow cruising past paddy fields, coconut groves and waterside homes, with tea later on.
  4. Sunset: the boat moors for the night. Houseboats do not cruise after dark, when the waterways are left to local fishermen.
  5. Evening: dinner on board and a quiet night on the water.
  6. Morning: mist on the canals, breakfast on deck, and you disembark at 9 am.

The pace is the point. There is no programme on board beyond meals, so bring a book, keep your phone for photographs and let the afternoon go by.

Should you choose Alleppey or Kumarakom?

Choose Alleppey for the classic houseboat experience, and Kumarakom for a quieter, resort-based stay beside the lake. They are on opposite sides of Vembanad Lake, roughly an hour apart by road.

When is the best time for a houseboat stay?

October to March is the most comfortable time for a houseboat: the heavy rain has passed, the evenings on deck are cooler and the canals are full. December and January are the busiest months, and the better boats are reserved early; December–January fills about 6 weeks ahead.

April and May are hot in the backwaters, so air conditioning matters more and the early morning becomes the best hour. In the monsoon, from June to September, boats usually still run, the landscape is at its greenest and the canals are quiet, though heavy rain can shorten a cruise. For the wider picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Kerala.

Who does a houseboat suit, and what should you ask before booking?

A houseboat suits couples above all, which is why it is the last night of Romantic Kerala, our 4 Nights · 5 Days honeymoon route. It also works well for families with children old enough to be careful near water, and for parents who would enjoy the scenery without any walking. It is less suited to anyone who grows restless without activities.

Boats vary far more than hotel rooms do, so the questions matter. Ask these before you confirm:

  • Is the boat for our exclusive use, and how many bedrooms does it have?
  • Does the air conditioning run all day, or only at night?
  • Which meals are included, and can the cook plan for vegetarian or other dietary needs?
  • What are the boarding and disembarking times?
  • Where does the boat moor for the night?
  • Does the boat carry life jackets and hold a current licence?

When we plan your trip, we answer these for you. The houseboat is chosen to match the rest of your stays and built into the route, so the cab that drops you at the jetty is waiting when you step off. We arrange houseboat nights as part of a complete Kerala trip rather than as standalone rentals: see Kerala houseboat packages and Alleppey houseboat packages, or the 5-day Kerala honeymoon itinerary to see where the night fits.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Your Questions, Answered

What time do you board and leave an Alleppey houseboat?

On our packages you board the houseboat at noon and disembark at 9 am the next morning. That gives you an afternoon cruise with lunch, sunset and dinner while moored, a night on the water and breakfast on deck before your driver collects you for the onward journey.

Is one night on a houseboat enough?

Yes, one night is enough for most travellers. It gives you a full afternoon of cruising, a sunset, a night moored on the backwaters and an early morning on the water. A second night largely repeats the first, so we usually suggest spending the extra day in the hills or at the beach.

Is vegetarian food available on a houseboat?

Yes. Meals are cooked fresh on board by the boat's cook, and a vegetarian Kerala meal of rice, vegetable curries and local side dishes is straightforward to arrange. Tell us your dietary preferences when you enquire, so the crew can plan and shop before you board.

Do houseboats in Alleppey have air conditioning?

Most houseboats have air-conditioned bedrooms, but on many boats the air conditioning runs only at night, while others run it through the day. It is one of the main differences between boat categories. Our packages specify a luxury AC houseboat; ask us about daytime cooling if you are travelling in the hotter months.
