Which is better, Munnar or Wayanad?
Munnar is the better choice for a first Kerala trip or a honeymoon: it is higher, cooler and sits on the classic route from Kochi to Thekkady and the Alleppey backwaters. Wayanad, in north Kerala, is better for forests, wildlife and quiet plantation stays, and is closest to Bangalore, Mysore and Calicut.
Key takeaways
- Munnar is about 4 hours from Kochi airport and pairs naturally with Thekkady and Alleppey.
- Wayanad lies in north Kerala; its nearest airports are Calicut and Kannur.
- Munnar is higher and cooler, with tea estates in every direction; Wayanad is forest, coffee and spice country.
- Every published Melo Tours package includes Munnar; Wayanad is arranged as a personalised itinerary.
What is the difference between Munnar and Wayanad?
Munnar is a high, tea-growing hill station in central Kerala; Wayanad is a wider, lower, forested district in the north of the state. Both lie in the Western Ghats and both are green all year. Munnar is about open views: tea estates folding over the hills, with viewpoints and a national park close to town. Wayanad is about being inside the landscape: coffee and pepper plantations, forest, caves and waterfalls spread across a large area.
They are also far apart. Driving from one to the other takes most of a day, so on a trip of a week or less the practical question is which one, not both.

Which is easier to reach?
It depends on where you start. From Kochi, where most flights into Kerala land, Munnar is the easier of the two: about 4 hours by road, with Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls on the way up. Wayanad is at the other end of the state. Its nearest airports are Calicut and Kannur, and the final approach from the coast is a ghat road of hairpin bends. Neither hill station has a railway station.
From Bangalore or Mysore the answer flips. Wayanad is a comfortable road trip from Karnataka, which makes it a favourite long-weekend escape for travellers from Bangalore. Travellers flying in from further away usually find more flights into Kochi, which favours Munnar.
Which has the better scenery and weather?
Munnar has the more dramatic scenery and the cooler air; Wayanad is gentler and more wooded. Munnar town sits at around 1,500 metres, and the hills above it, including Anamudi, the highest peak in South India, rise well beyond that. The result is the picture most people have of Kerala's hills: tea bushes running to the horizon, morning mist and a jacket in the evening.
Wayanad is a plateau, much of it considerably lower than Munnar, so days are warmer and the vegetation is different: coffee under shade trees, pepper vines, bamboo and thick forest, with tea in some pockets. Both get heavy rain from June to August, and both are at their greenest just after it.
What is there to do in each?
Munnar's sights are close together and easy to cover in a day or two; Wayanad's are spread out and reward a slower stay.
In Munnar
- Eravikulam National Park, for Nilgiri tahr on open grassland
- Top Station, for the widest view across the ranges
- Mattupetty Dam, Kundala Lake and Echo Point, usually combined in one outing
- The KDHP Tea Museum and a walk through a tea estate
In Wayanad
- Edakkal Caves, with ancient rock carvings reached by a steep climb
- Chembra Peak, a trek to a heart-shaped lake, with entry regulated by the forest department
- Banasura Sagar, a reservoir dotted with small forested islands
- Jeep safaris in the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary, and waterfalls such as Soochipara

Which is better for a honeymoon or a first trip to Kerala?
Munnar, for most couples and most first trips. The reason is what comes after it. From Munnar the road continues to Thekkady and then down to Alleppey, so in five days you can have tea hills, a wildlife sanctuary and a night on a houseboat without backtracking.
That is the route of Romantic Kerala, our lead honeymoon package: 4 Nights · 5 Days from ₹29,999 per couple. Our 5-day Kerala honeymoon itinerary explains it day by day.
Wayanad does not connect to the backwaters in the same way, because Alleppey is a long day's drive to the south. A Wayanad trip is better planned as its own journey through north Kerala, or paired with Mysore and Coorg.
Choose Wayanad if you have already seen Munnar, if you are driving from Bangalore, or if what you want is a few quiet days on a plantation with forest walks and little else on the agenda.
Can Melo Tours plan both?
Yes, in different ways. Munnar is on the classic Kochi–Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey route and is part of every package we publish, from Munnar Short Escape at 2 Nights · 3 Days to the ten-day Kerala Complete Circuit. Our Munnar packages page lists them.
No published package includes Wayanad. We arrange it as a personalised itinerary instead: tell us your dates and starting city, and we send a plan and a quote within 24 hours, at no charge. As with every Melo Tours trip, it is private, with a dedicated air-conditioned cab and the same driver throughout.
Not sure when to go? Both regions follow the same broad seasons, which we cover month by month in the best time to visit Kerala.
